Losing Your COBRA Coverage

Your COBRA coverage doesn’t last forever. The length of time that you can have COBRA depends on your qualifying event.

COBRA coverage may end when:

  • You reach the last day of your maximum coverage period.
  • Your premiums are not paid on time.
  • Your former employer no longer maintains any group health plan.
  • You obtain coverage under another group health plan, unless the other group health plan has an exclusion for pre-existing conditions (for plan years beginning prior to 2014).
  • A qualified beneficiary becomes entitled to Medicare benefits after electing COBRA.

It’s a good idea to know about other coverage options before COBRA ends. Learn more on our COBRA Alternatives page.
