Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs and is available to everyone who is eligible for Medicare. Part D coverage may help lower your prescription drug costs and help protect against higher costs in the future.
To get this coverage, you must purchase a plan offered by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare. Part D coverage may be purchased separately or as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan. These plans cover generic and brand-name drugs included in the plan’s formulary.
Your Costs
You will pay a monthly premium for this coverage, and your plan may also charge a yearly deductible, as well as co-payments or co-insurance. You will also pay more if you reach the “coverage gap.” Your actual costs will vary, depending on:
- The drugs you take
- The plan you choose
- If you use a pharmacy in your plan’s network
- If your drugs are on your plan’s formulary
- If you qualify for assistance through the Extra Help program
